I Teach

This blog is a place for me to debrief myself after my classes. It will serve both as a place for venting and as an archive for what worked and didn't work for me. I welcome outsider comments about teaching techniques or anything else.

I Swear I Didn't Make These Up

Conglomerate Instructor Evaluation, Fall 2005 Final
Course
SOC 102

General comments about the instructor:
I liked his enthusiasm and his frequent use of class discussion (which is much more interesting and often more enlightening than any lecture). However, he failed to provide differing opinions on each subject (maybe this is just a usual occurence in sociology, I don't know).

I really liked Prof. --, he was helpful outside of class which many teachers are not. He help you understand many of the material on a personal level. I really like the CLASS!

Prof. -- was always prepared for class. He was incredibly approachable and friendly and related well with the students in the class. I didn't use his office hours but when I contacted him through email, his responses were always timely. I think his grading standards were a bit stringent for a 100 level course and I wish he would have provided us with a few more comments on our graded papers. He was, however, incredibly timely at giving those papers back to us.

Professor -- has been one of my favorite and I think one of the best professors I have had. He was very into the subject matter, but still very open minded and interested in what we had to say. The way class was run, with large class discussions and the occasional movie and presentation, was really effective in keeping me interested during the class and getting me generally interested in the subject material. The paper topics were very good and obviously thoroughly thought through, and I thought his grading was very fair. He have learned a lot this semester and have really become interested in sociology.

This was the best class/teacher I have had at Vanderbilt. Lectures were interesting, high class involvement kept me awake and outside sources like movies and guest lecturers brought other points of view.

I really enjoyed Prof. -- this semeter. He knew his material and made the class appealing to his students. His lectures were interesting, not dry. He had a good mix of movies, speakers, and lectures.

Professor -- is passionate about his subject and it reflects in the class. He does a good job of relating to the students and making the subject matter feasible for students to apply to their own lives.

relaxed and open minded about students opinions

he was great about letting everyone have a say in class. also, he was always there to help with paper topics and general discussion outside of class

good teacher. relates well to students.

Professor -- was a wonderful teacher. He is very knowledgable about social contemporary problems. He also is very good at relating to his students. I enjoyed coming to class every Tuesday and Thursday. I would readily take another sociology class taught by him again.

I am a displaced student who had to commute to classes everyday. While this professor was excellent, in my opinion, the fact that class was often cancelled with no forewarning tarnished my view of him.

Very effective in getting through to the students and engaging us in class discussions. Prof. -- has a great way of getting students to think about "why" things are the way they are in society and is very accepting of everyone's comments.

The course helped me understand many things that take place in my surroundings.

The course had a lot of work for an introductory 100 level course. The grading standards were also stringent for the level of the course. This aside, the class and the teacher were both engaging. Prof. -- was always prepared for class and did a good job of incorporating alternative methods of teaching (apart from straight lectures) to get the class involved.

This was one of my favorite courses, mainly because of the professor.

This was the best course I have taken at vanderbilt.

It was a great course. Very interesting.

The subject matter is very intriguing. It was so interesting to learn about the societal norms and ideas that cause all of our root problems.

informative, interesting, great guest speakers

I found this class to be quite enjoyable as the discussions are something that can be thought about everyday. It causes you to question why our society acts a certain way and what can be done to change it.

Excellent course, -- is a good Prof. and carries the class very well...would definitly take another course with him.

I saw Oprah had the cast of "Crash" on the other day. May have been a re-run and I didn't watch the whole thing. I thought of you. You should check it out.
